We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Oh, we absolutely adore our furry friends, don’t we? But let’s be honest, they can turn into a hot mess when they’re overstimulated.

Squirrel darting across the street? Cue the barking frenzy! Random passerby? Oh, it’s growl time!

And, of course, there’s that oh-so-charming moment when your pooch decides they’re auditioning for a runaway dog show.

You’re either clutching the leash like it’s a lifeline because they’ve bolted, or you’re being dragged along like a ragdoll while they prance off, oblivious to your struggle.

Clearly, it’s time to call in the pros. You need someone who can help turn your four-legged whirlwind into a well-behaved companion. So, where do you find the best dog trainers in Halifax?

Don’t sweat it, because I’ve got the ultimate list for you. I’ve been working on this for a while, curating the best options for dog owners who want their pups to be more refined Fidos and less rough rascals!

How much do dog trainers charge in Halifax?
Dog trainers in Halifax charge an average of $250 per session.
Prices can change based on the trainer’s experience, the type of training, and how long each session is. Buying packaged sessions can save you money.

How We Chose the Best Dog Trainers in Halifax

Experienced Trainers: We looked for trainers with extensive experience and relevant certifications in dog training, such as the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT).

Follow-Up Support: We selected trainers who provide follow-up support and guidance after the training sessions.
Specialization in Behavior Issues: We sought out trainers who specialize in addressing specific behavioral issues and challenges.
Client Reviews: We considered client testimonials to gauge the effectiveness and reliability of the trainers.

Address: 6300 Lady Hammond Rd

Operating Hours:

  • Closed on Sunday
  • Open 24 hours from Monday to Saturday

Sarah McManaman, a dog trainer since 2009, joined Sublime Canine Services in 2010. Here, she offers a variety of training programs, including puppy socialization, basic life skills, tricks, specialty classes, board and train, private training, and online training.

Sarah excels in all areas but has a special knack for working with puppies. She’s often booked for her Baby Puppy Board and Train program, perfect for busy owners who can’t give their puppies the attention they need during their first 16 weeks.

With Sarah, you know your dogs are in good hands. Past clients we surveyed said she shared many helpful stories about dog training that made it easier for them to understand their dogs.

However, not everyone was completely satisfied. A few clients mentioned that Sarah gave more anecdotes and fewer specific techniques than they wanted.

Pros

  • Provides comprehensive dog training
  • Various training options available
  • Expertise in puppy training
  • Offers engaging and informative stories

Cons

  • Stories sometimes overshadow specific techniques

Knowledgeable and helpful

“We did an Intro Puppy class at Sublime and it was a great way to socialize our pup! Sarah is super knowledgable and helpful and we’re now doing a second class with her a year later.”

Skilled trainer turned puppy calmer, better-mannered, and more balanced

“…Recently, our puppy spent 8 days with Sarah while we were away as part of the “Puppy Board and Train” program. We knew our puppy would be in great hands and have many amazing adventures while we were gone. What we didn’t expect is how much she learned during such a short time! Our puppy came back calmer, better mannered and more balanced after only 8 days! It really showed Sarah’s skills and the effort she put into positive reinforcement training with our puppy. We cannot recommend this program enough. Sarah was absolutely amazing!!”

Operating Hours:

Lindsay Fraser kicked off her dog training career in 2013 with Sublime Canine Services. During this time, she also earned certifications in dog behavior from Dalhousie University and Cloverfield Behaviour Services.

In 2015, she launched Nova Dogsport, located just 20 minutes from downtown Halifax. The facility’s 65′ x 140′ fenced outdoor area with astroturf is especially popular, providing ample space for dogs to practice.

Here, she offers year-round training classes, including group and private agility sessions, fun matches, and agility equipment building. This has earned her fans, both human and canine.

The pet owners we interviewed rave about Lindsay’s expertise and patience, noting that her trained dogs excel in disc dog, agility, and obedience events.

However, her popularity means scheduling can be a challenge. Fortunately, Lindsay is quick to refer clients to her skilled colleagues if needed.

3. Kristen Cameron

Website: http://www.findyourbalancedogtraining.com/

Phone: +1 902-441-8826

Operating Hours:

  • Open 24 hours daily

Self-taught dog trainer Kristen Cameron runs Find Your Balance Dog Training. She’s also a member of the International Association of Canine Professionals, which supports dog trainers around the world.

When it comes to canine training, Kristen uses E-Collars and prong collars. E-Collars, with a remote and receiver, send signals to correct canine behavior harmlessly. In contrast, prong collars curb unwanted behavior but can harm dogs if misused.

If you don’t like these methods, Kristen might not be the right trainer for you.

For those who trust Kristen’s methods, they say her approaches work for their dogs. Clients we talked to had dogs with behavior issues that other trainers couldn’t fix, so they went to Kristen.

They loved how quickly their dogs changed from misbehaving to well-behaved. They also appreciated how knowledgeable Kristen was in explaining each step of the process.

However, securing a spot can be challenging due to high demand and the need for upfront payment.

Pros

  • Effective for difficult behavior issues
  • Clear and knowledgeable explanations
  • Quick turnaround in behavior

Cons

  • Potential harm if prong collars are misused
  • High demand
  • Upfront payment required

Previously overstimulated dog is now calm and behaved

“If you are looking for a dog trainer in/near HRM, Kristen is your girl. We have a 2 year old german shepherd who was hyper and overly excited at times due to a lack of impulse control. She pulled on leash, would jump on visitors, bark at the front window when dogs were walking by, etc. We were unable to enjoy our dog to the fullest because she wasn’t calm enough to take out in public. We’ve tried other dog trainers in the past that have recommended unrealistic and ineffective training methods. After doing a 3 week board and train with Kristen our girl is a whole new dog. She is calm and behaved and is now able to come with us wherever we go. We can’t thank Kristen enough, she is the best!”

Reactive and occasionally aggressive dog is now behaved and confident

“Kristen is truly a dog-whisperer! My partner and I were struggling with many reactive and occasionally aggressive behaviours in our 2 year old daschund but after a month board and train with Kristen things have become so much better! We used to be so anxious doing anything with our dog for fear of how he would behave but have gained new confidence in approaching situations that we used to completely avoid! Would deifnitely reccomend Find Your Balance Dog training for anyone experiencing similar issues!”

Ted Efthymiadis has been training dogs since 2009 and now works at Mango Dogs, a fenced dog training center. He specializes in fixing behavioral problems like aggression, reactivity, and resource guarding, having helped over a thousand dogs.

Ted uses different methods to teach better behavior, including food rewards, E-Collars, prong collars, head collars, and muzzles when needed. With vast experience across breeds, he’s mastered off-leash reliability, even with challenging dogs.

You’ll be glad to know that each training program is tailored to your dog’s unique needs. This ensures results without a one-size-fits-all approach.

His approach has rehabilitated numerous reactive and aggressive dogs, creating happy clients. Those we spoke to appreciate his knowledge and patience during the whole process.

However, some clients noticed their dogs relapsing into unwanted behavior after a while. To prevent this, it’s best to regularly practice Ted’s training techniques, which he usually shares at the end of each session.

Pros

  • Extensive experience with dog behavior
  • Custom training programs
  • Effective with various breeds and off-leash training
  • Patience and experienced

Cons

  • Occasional behavior relapses
  • Requires regular practice of techniques

Knowledgeable and patient, with positive results

“Ted and Danny were fantastic. They took the their time explaining their training methods to ensure that my wife and I were comfortable with the approach which we appreciated. Additionally it was clear they love what they do and most importantly love dogs. Ruthie (our pup) has responded very well. And we are certain more progress will follow.”

Managed to train highly reactive dog while alleviating concerns

“I can not recommend Mango dogs enough. Ted and Danny were fantastic. My dog, Pete, was highly reactive. I dreaded taking him in and out of the apartment building, and in the elevator. After 4 weeks it’s like I have a completely different dog. We’re enjoying our walks, and have even been able to take him to busy public spaces which I never could before. Prior to the training, I was hesitant to use the e-collar, but the way the guys demonstrated, and explained it relieved all of my concerns, and showed me it was just another tool in the dog training arsenal.”

Website: http://mindfulcanine.ca/

Phone: +1 902-478-3533

Operating Hours:

  • Open 24 hours daily

Miranda, the owner of The Mindful Canine, brings her expertise as a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA), veterinary technician, and family dog mediator to her work.

As a family dog mediator, she assists families by helping new dogs settle in. On the other hand, her canine coaching teaches dogs specific skills and commands to improve their behavior.

One of her most popular programs is The Worry-Free Walks. This 6-month program includes a monthly masterclass, video training sessions, live group support, and one-on-one chat support.

Miranda’s multi-faceted approach is a big reason why she has so many loyal clients, both human and canine.

Pet owners we’ve spoken with have particularly praised Miranda for incorporating Reiki techniques, among others, into her training. As a result, they noticed their dogs becoming more confident, friendly, and sociable, especially during walks.

However, the program is on the pricey side at $1,997. Fortunately, payment plans are available, so you can spread out the cost.

Pros

  • Certified professional dog trainer and veterinary technician
  • Effective training programs
  • Supplementary approaches including Reiki
  • Installment plans available

Cons

  • Can be costly for some

Kind, calm, intuitive approach resulted in better behavior

“I had an amazing experience working with Miranda and my year old lab, Daisy. When I first met with her, I was concerned about Daisy’s leash reactivity and poor recall, as well as her inability to focus on me while presented with distraction. Miranda’s kind, calm, and intuitive approach was unique and unlike any other training or obedience classes I had been exposed to. She was very mindful of Daisy’s special demeanour and helped me develop skills tailored towards correcting Daisy’s bad habits. With time, consistent practice and reward, Daisy has become fantastic on and off leash! I cannot recommend Miranda enough for anyone who feels like it may take a miracle to correct their pup’s bad habits. Thank you Miranda!”

Caring and supportive program with rescued dog

“Working with Miranda truly changed my relationship with my 5-year-old rescue. Miranda’s training program and corresponding resources are comprehensive and really take into account the specific needs of your dog based on breed(s), home environment, nutritional needs, etc.. She genuinely cares for the well-being of her non-dog clients as well and provides helpful tips to manage stress and be more present with your dog. I felt incredibly supported by Miranda during our program, and I am very grateful for her guidance. Taking my dog for walks has become a more joyful activity and, as a result, I feel closer than ever to my favourite canine companion.”
