You might be tempted to just go and ride the waves. But before you dive into the adventure, make sure you’re packed and prepped with the right gear to stay comfortable and capture every thrilling moment.
- Bathing suit and quick-dry shirt. Wear a bathing suit and a quick-dry shirt, as cotton takes longer to dry.
- Change of clothes. Some tour operators, like River Runners, have hot showers, so bring a change of clothes to freshen up afterward.
- Towel and toiletries. It’s best to bring your own towel and travel-sized toiletries. A lightweight, quick-dry towel is perfect for travel
- Water-friendly shoes. Closed-toed water shoes or old sneakers protect your feet without the risk of coming off.
- Waterproof camera. It’s easier to capture the thrill with a waterproof camera or phone.
- Sunscreen. Just remember to apply waterproof sunscreen before hitting the water.
Tips for a Great Tidal Bore Rafting Experience

Want to make the most of your tidal bore rafting adventure? Here are some expert tips you might not have thought about.
- Skip the white clothes. The Shubenacadie River’s water can turn brown from sediment, so avoid wearing white or light colors as they may get stained.
- Don’t drink the night before. With tall rolling waves, it’s best to avoid having alcohol the night before to stay comfortable and prevent sickness.
- Eat before you go. Rafting times might overlap mealtimes, so eat a light meal or snack beforehand.
- Arrive about an hour early. This gives you enough time to sign waivers, pay, meet your guide, and get your gear ready.
- Know where to sit. Front seats give a wilder ride, while back seats are calmer.
- Get travel insurance. This is especially helpful if you’re not from Canada, as insurance can help cover medical costs, trip cancellations, and lost luggage.
