When I arrived at a friend’s house the other day, her stepdaughter was in the middle of doing homework. Naturally, I asked her how school has been, and she shared that she was struggling with a few subjects.
Math, in particular, was very challenging for her. When I checked to see what she was currently learning, it was all equations and formulas that I had long forgotten how to do.
I genuinely don’t remember how I survived my math classes as a student, and I can’t imagine being a parent trying to teach their child nowadays.
Thankfully, there are knowledgeable experts they can rely on. I took the liberty and scoured Halifax for tutors who can help students ace their math tests.
How much do math tutors charge in Halifax?
In Halifax, math tutors typically charge around $20 to $80 per hour. The final rate will depend on the tutor’s experience, the student’s grade level, and the complexity of the topic being discussed.

1. Sylvan Learning

Phone: +1 902 701 9199
Business Hours:
- Monday to Friday – 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM
- Saturday – 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM
- Sunday – Closed
With more than 750 locations globally, Sylvan Learning has helped over 4 million students ace a wide array of subjects, including science, foreign languages, and math.
What makes them stand out is their comprehensive Insight Assessment, which tells parents where their child stands academically. It also informs experts on what strategy would be best for helping the pupil improve.
We particularly like that they try to make their math lessons as interesting as possible. Their instructors make use of interactive activities, such as fun worksheets and games, to keep clients engaged.
All the courses are personalized to the student’s current school curriculum, giving you the confidence that your child will be able to catch up in their classes.
Unfortunately, some reports say that their approach may not be the best for neurodivergent children.
The teachers are very helpful and supportive
“I went Sylvan for a few months to get help with my math. The teachers are very helpful and supportive. My results were so much better and I liked that they could help me with my school homework. They also helped with organising my binder.”

We have seen significant improvements in our children’s grades this year
“Our children are taking math and reading classes at Sylvan for exactly one year. Now I can actually allow myself to write a review about our experiences. The program or curriculum is properly designed and tailored to align with regional school standards. It’s delivery and professional trainers are making it easier for students to learn and then transfer it to their schools. The administrators are regularly making decisions based on discussions with school teachers and parents to meet students needs. Finally, We have seen significant improvements in our children’s grades this year and would definitely recommend it to other families whose kids need support with school curriculum.”

For over 40 years, Oxford Learning has been helping kids from age 3 to grade 12 do better in school.
They offer tailored tutoring programs that are determined by a student’s pace. Based on what we’ve heard, they only move on from teaching a skill once a student has mastered it, whether that takes an hour or a month.
We’re big fans of how their experts prioritize long-term learning solutions that go beyond grades. Besides test scores, they also focus on developing a client’s motivation, self-esteem, and confidence for later in life.
Their instructors apply the same kind of philosophy to math. They take numerical concepts and apply them to real-life situations to make them more relatable and easier to understand for students.
The only thing that can be a bit of a hassle is transparency. They don’t publish their rates, and it’s hard to get a quote at first inquiry.
Their approach has been supportive and positive
“Oxford Learning has been incredibly helpful for my kids with math and reading. Their approach has been supportive and positive. The tutors have made sure they master one skill before moving on to the next, which has increased their confidence and their desire to learn. The focus on strategies, skills and understanding rather than memorization has been really helpful for my kids. No more tears at the mention of fractions – thank you Oxford!”

3. Tutor Doctor

Phone: +1 902 913 6734
Business Hours:
- Monday to Friday – 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM
- Saturday to Sunday – 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
After being featured on channels like CBC, Forbes, and The Wall Street Journal, there’s a chance that you’ve already heard of the Tutor Doctor. They offer in-home and online tutoring services for students from elementary school up to university.
Working with them starts with a free consultation, where kids and parents can discuss their goals and weaknesses. From this, you’ll be matched with a tutor that aligns best with your learning style.
Similarly, their math lessons are customized — they provide multiple solution strategies and let the students choose which one they prefer.
We love that their staff offers plenty of support by asking for feedback and regularly sending progress and session reports to parents.
But since they don’t have a center, they’re unable to provide rush or drop-in tutoring services. All appointments must be planned in advance with a set location.
Both my son and daughter have seen their grades improve significantly
“We’ve been working with Tutor Doctor for only a couple of months, and the difference has been remarkable. Both my son and daughter have seen their grades improve significantly, and their confidence is growing right along with them. They’re incredibly flexible, patient, and committed to truly helping kids understand the material rather than just get through it. We love Zahra & Larissa! I’m so grateful we found them, and I would highly recommend reaching out if you’re looking for someone who can make a real impact.”

Our tutor is excellent
“A tutor comes to our home once a week and meets our daughter where she is in both math and science. The tutor is highly capable with the content and able to respond to our daughter’s questions and explain what is happening in class (grade 10 Math and Science). Our tutor, Larissa, is excellent at helping with test preparation, explaining content, answering questions, and reviewing homework (without giving too much help!). I highly recommend Tutor Doctor.”

4. Scholars of Bedford

Address: 27 Dellridge Lane, Unit 1077, Bedford
Phone: +1 902 406 0666
Business Hours:
- Monday to Thursday – 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM
- Friday – 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM
- Saturday – 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM
- Sunday – Closed
Since opening in 1999, Scholars Education has expanded to having multiple tuition centers across Canada. Their success comes from hinging their services on their students’ strengths.
They loop the child’s classroom teacher into crafting comprehensive study plans. And to make it even more exciting, they use a rewards-based system that a lot of kids look forward to.
We were impressed to hear that this approach noticeably boosts grades after 40 hours’ worth of sessions. And after every 12 hours, parents and tutors meet to discuss progress.
It’s a big plus that they don’t have enrollment contracts. You’ll only have to pay per class without having to purchase a package that’ll bind you for several lessons.
This is especially useful, considering that they occasionally switch out tutors. Although there haven’t been many complaints about it, some customers say that it causes a bit of confusion and inconsistency.
The teachers are very friendly, helpful, and accommodating
“Scholars of Bedford is amazing. It was a great experience for my 2 kids. The teachers are very friendly, helpful and accommodating with busy schedules. Scholars helped improve my kids’ confidence and skills, resulting in significant improvements with their grades. They were always happy to come and learn. The points system was a bit hit as well. Thank you very much.”

5. Tutorax

Address: 30 Rue Lefort, Laval, QC
Phone: +1 514 548 3242
Business Hours:
- Monday to Friday – 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM
- Saturday to Sunday – 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Tutorax’s in-home and online tutoring has helped more than 20,000 students all over the country.
They respond fast to inquiries, and will proceed to finding an instructor as soon as they receive your details. It usually takes their team a week to match clients with an in-home educator and a day for virtual tutors.
Mathematics students get plenty of 1-on-1 practice, where lessons are summarized, and concepts that they didn’t understand are repeatedly reviewed. Parents share that they start seeing an increase in grades after 3 months of sessions.
Our favorite thing about them is their flexible scheduling. It’s up to the clients to decide the frequency and duration of the lessons, depending on how much support their child needs.
However, there have been instances where tutors cancel appointments at the last minute.
We have found the perfect tutor for our daughter
“We have found the perfect tutor for our daughter. Vipul has been a tremendous help in maths for the past 5 months. It’s a great fit. I have seen a big improvement in her notes. I truly recommend Tutorax!”

Tutorax far exceeded my expectations
“Tutorax far exceeded my expectations. We had tried another tutoring service and were disappointed. Friendly and efficient service from the first phone call. My son had his first session with Theertana this past weekend and already learned a lot. He requested that I book further sessions with her.”
