For years, I was always very embarrassed about my singing voice. A kid made fun of me for it once, and it led to an irrational fear of letting other people hear me try to carry a tune out loud.
This meant that I avoided karaoke as much as possible — until one fateful night when my friends miraculously convinced me to go. It was genuinely eye-opening to see people dancing and singing their hearts out without being insecure.
That experience showed me how singing in public could be joyful and freeing, and it inspired me to do something to get over my fear. That’s why I began looking for singing lessons here in Halifax that could help me develop both my voice and self-confidence.
How much do singing lessons cost in Halifax?
In Halifax, singing lessons cost around $25 to $100 per session. The final rate will depend on the duration of your appointment and the experience of your instructor.

You’ll be working with Elise Besler, who has more than 2 decades of experience as a music educator. Her clients have gone on to be featured in shows and events like Lollapalooza and Canadian Idol.
Through weekly or bi-weekly sessions, she’ll train you how to build vocal strength and power. People attest that her tailored lessons were crucial in finding their unique sound.
What really impressed us is that she also teaches her students somatic body-based tools, which calm the nervous system so you can perform in public with ease.
Just keep in mind that payments for classes are done on a monthly basis. So she and her team won’t issue refunds if you decide to cancel mid-contract.

Helped me rehab my voice when a diagnosis led me to believe there was no hope
“Working with Elise is truly a magical experience. I’ve been fortunate to work with her periodically over the last handful of years, and I can confidently say she has helped me transform both my voice and myself. She helped me rehab my voice when a diagnosis led me to believe there was no hope. Elise never tries to change who you are as an artist or performer. Instead, creates a warm and safe environment to learn who you are, your power, and cultivate love for the voice you offer to the world.”

2. Chelsi Madonna School of Music

Address: 2307 Clifton St, Unit 5
Business Hours:
- Monday to Thursday – 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM
- Saturday – 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM
- Sunday – 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM
- Friday – Closed
The Chelsi Madonna School of Music was only founded in 2024, but it’s already making waves in the industry. Their main instructor, aka the company’s namesake, was recently crowned the East Coast Music Association’s Innovator of the Year.
Apart from her, they also have teachers focused on instructing individuals and entire choirs. So whether you feel like learning alone or with a group, they have the expertise to accommodate you.
Speaking of being accommodating, the studio is operated by queer people who are dedicated to making it inclusive and supportive for all. This is why we believe they’d be an amazing, encouraging environment for beginners.
They’ll still push you creatively, though, especially with increasing your vocal range. After several months, you’ll be surprised at how easy it is to hit the notes you couldn’t reach before.
The only catch is that they occasionally cancel classes without refunds. Instead, they’ll arrange a make-up session later on.
You will be hard-pressed to find a better voice teacher
“I’m 72 years old and have been taking voice lessons from Chelsi for 10 months. She has helped me to add 5 or 6 semitones to the top of my range and 2 or 3 to the bottom. She also has me singing with more colour, presence and agility, while using less effort. She is irrepressibly cheerful, enthusiastic, and supportive, and she likes to have a laugh. The lessons are always a bright spot in my week. You will be hard pressed to find a better voice teacher.”

Voice lessons are so much fun, and they are the highlight of my week
“I have been taking voice lessons from Chelsi for 5 months. It has been an amazing experience. Chesli’s enthusiasm, support and encouragement have been instrumental in my increased confidence and singing ability. She has helped me increase my vocal range and volume. More importantly she has welcomed me into the community of music and musicians that she has created as part of her school which has greatly enriched my life. Chelsi’s voice lessons are so much fun and they are the highlight of my week.”

3. Merry Time Music Company

Address: 5558 Sullivan St
Phone: +1 902 440 7273
Merry Time Music Company is all about making music more social and fun. Although they offer voice classes for adults, their kids’ courses are the most popular.
Parents would be happy to hear that they accept clients as young as 5. Here, children can explore how to make harmonies and learn the fundamentals of singing.
Meanwhile, older kids who are in school can also join through the company’s summer programs and camps. For these classes, the students love bringing in trending songs and learning them with friends.
Our favorite part is that they get to perform in an optional recital if they want to. They’ll be supported by a professional band, but it’ll still be a low-pressure environment so that the budding musicians don’t get too nervous.
Sadly, the actual music studio and its facilities aren’t very accessible, since you’ll have to go up a flight of stairs without a lift to get to it.
Merry Time Music has been nothing but a positive experience
“Merry Time Music has been nothing but a positive experience for my 5 year old daughter. It has been a wonderful introduction to music for her. Cat is an energetic and enthusiastic teacher who has a gift for working with young children and keeping them engaged. She is patient and supportive during all parts of the lesson. My daughter looks forward to her lesson with Cat every week. She adores Cat and has a lot of fun learning from her.”

They adapt to the individual needs of the learners
“Our family has been students of Merry Time Music for 3 years. The teachers are wonderful, caring and supportive. They bring music to life with a fun and creative learning environment and teach a variety of musical techniques (composition, ear training, sight reading, theory, performance). They adapt to the individual needs of the learners. My kids love practicing their music at home. My kids even seek out new music to bring in to learn at their next lesson and have started composing their own songs.”

4. Davis Vocal Studios

Address: 321 Nottingham St, Bedford
Phone: +1 902 789 3836
Business Hours:
- Monday to Friday – 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM
- Sunday – 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM
- Saturday – Closed
The Davis Vocal Studios is led by voice specialists Jason Davis and Lucy Hayes. Over the years, they’ve worked with singers of all levels to help them sing more naturally and with tonal clarity.
Your journey with them will start with an in-depth assessment in which they’ll have you sing some scales. This will tell them all about where you’re at vocally and where to start with lessons.
As you progress, you’ll notice that they prioritize healthy techniques above all. They’ll teach you how to improve your range and stamina, while reducing fatigue and the risk of vocal damage.
We especially like that they have something for students who wish to pursue musical theatre. The Broadway Company Players is a weekly program that focuses on dancing, acting, and on-stage singing.
However, remember to tell them at least a day in advance if you need to skip class, or else they won’t provide a refund or a make-up appointment.
My daughter’s voice, as well as her self-confidence, has improved tremendously
“My 11-year-old daughter has been working with Lucy for a few years now and it’s been an absolutely wonderful experience. Lucy is warm, compassionate, knowledgeable, highly-skilled, and flexible in her approach depending on the needs of the student. My daughter’s voice, as well as her self-confidence, have improved tremendously with Lucy’s coaching. She has a gift for harnessing the abilities of her students.”

My singing and music-reading abilities have both expanded greatly
“I took a full semester of singing lessons with Jason and could not recommend him more highly. I always felt very welcome and not judged, which was very important to me, as someone insecure in my singing ability and as someone whose voice has changed due to hormone replacement therapy. Jason does lessons in-person and online which is convenient, he is very patient and knowledgeable, and is overall a great teacher and person. Their home and studio are very clean and welcoming. My singing and music reading abilities have both expanded greatly through my lessons with Jason and I finished my semester with the confidence I need to continue my musical endeavours.”

5. Rachael Delano Music

Address: Rosedale Avenue
Phone: +1 902 449 0877
Business Hours:
- Monday to Friday – 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM
- Saturday to Sunday – Closed
Rachel Delano and her team are one of the best options in the city for contemporary music coaching. She doesn’t just teach beginners, but also music majors, theatre performers, and gigging musicians.
Apart from their expertise, we included them in this list for their flexibility. This is one of the rare schools in Halifax that offer both in-person and virtual 1:1 appointments.
Their individualized sessions also set them apart, as they focus on guiding each client to overcome their unique weaknesses with healthy techniques.
While you’re in between lessons, you can turn to their app-based online training program for practice. Many students agree that the weekly uploads have been crucial in helping them stay consistent and see progress faster.
Unfortunately, with the company still being quite small, their services get booked up pretty quickly. Most customers have to wait for a whole season before moving up the waitlist.
Within a few lessons, I was singing confidently and louder than I ever had
“I needed a coach who could help me find and fix my trouble areas such as breathing and projection. Even more important for me was finding someone who would work with me on my own songs. My prayers were answered when I found Rachael. Within a few lessons I was singing confidently and louder than I ever had before! It inspired me to take a whole new look and approach at how I write music. I recommend Rachael to everyone who wants to sing. Whether it’s for personal satisfaction or to do so professionally, Rachael can help anyone at any age of any vocal range. Yes, you can sing. You have the ability and Rachael can help you.”
