5 Best Martial Arts Classes in Halifax That Will Push You Further

best-martial-arts-classes-halifax
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Whether you’re choosing between a gym and martial arts, it’s worth thinking about what you want to get out of your workouts.

A traditional gym membership can help you build strength and improve your fitness, but martial arts takes things a step further by teaching confidence, discipline, and practical self-defense along the way.

Plus, every class gives you a full-body workout while helping you develop new skills and stay motivated.

The good news is that the city has plenty of excellent academies offering everything from karate and taekwondo to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA. To make your search easier, I’ve rounded up some of the best martial arts classes in Halifax.

How much do martial arts classes in Halifax cost?

Martial arts classes in Halifax typically cost between $70 and $175 per month for an unlimited membership, depending on the discipline and the facility.

Membership TypeAverage Cost Range
Non-Profit Traditional Clubs (Per Term)$30 – $40 per month
Premium MMA/BJJ Academies$70 – $175 per month

How We Reviewed

Training Curriculum: We assessed the depth and variety of the curriculum offered, ensuring each school provides high-quality technical instruction.

Each academy was assessed for its ability to cater to both casual fitness seekers and dedicated martial artists.
Instructor Pedigree: We looked at the experience and lineage of the head instructors to ensure students are learning from qualified professionals. A school’s reputation often rests on the competition success and technical proficiency of its teaching staff.
Facility Accessibility: We considered the location, parking availability, and class schedule flexibility for each facility. Schools that offer a wide range of training times generally received higher marks for their ability to fit into a modern lifestyle.
Value and Pricing Models: We included the schools that offer clear, fair, and non-predatory financial terms for their students.

Address: 3600 Kempt Rd

Hours: Class schedule varies

If you’re looking for a martial arts school where everyone genuinely supports each other, Halifax Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Society is definitely worth checking out.

Since they’re run as a non-profit society, the money members pay goes right back into improving the club instead of generating profits. That creates a welcoming environment where the focus is on helping students grow.

I dropped into one of their Open Roll sessions, and what stood out to me was how friendly everyone was. Even the more experienced students took the time to help beginners feel comfortable and offer useful tips along the way.

The only thing to keep in mind is their pass policy. Monthly unlimited passes expire after 30 days, whether you’ve used them often or not. So, if you’re signing up, it’s best to train consistently to get the most value from your membership.

Pros

  • First class is completely free
  • Discounted family pricing for multi-member households
  • Permanent 10% discount for military and first responders
  • Structured “Open Roll” sessions for free practice

Cons

  • Strict 30-day expiration on monthly passes

They have the best training schedule

Halifax BJJ is by far the premier Jiu Jitsu gym in not only Halifax but Atlantic Canada. They have the best training schedule, the best coaches, the best atmosphere/community. Also if you don’t want to strictly do Jiu Jitsu they have MMA, and Muay Thai classes. They even have a strength training area for anytime use to work on your fitness. Save yourself the search and just sign up. You won’t be disappointed!

Incredible gym that my family goes to for BJJ

Incredible gym that my family goes to for BJJ! It has a vibrant kids program that’s friendly to both boys and girls, classes for beginners and advanced practitioners alike. As someone 40+ their masters classes are incredible for people looking for something more technical and methodical.

2. Maritime Jiu Jitsu

Address: 6310 Hood St

Contact: [email protected]

Hours: Class schedule varies

For those who like the idea of learning more than one martial art, Maritime Jiu Jitsu is a great place to train.

Instead of focusing on just one discipline, they combine Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Muay Thai, and wrestling, so you can develop both your striking and grappling skills in one gym.

I had the chance to visit one of their classes, and what really caught my attention was how they used wrestling drills to improve ground control. It’s not something you see at every BJJ academy, and it adds another layer to the training.

Just take note that most classes start at 5 in the afternoon or even later. If you work a regular 9-to-5 job, you’ll want to plan your training around those hours.

Pros

  • Integrated curriculum including BJJ, Muay Thai, and wrestling
  • Dedicated Kids BJJ program for youth development
  • National-level coaching for freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling
  • Regular “Open Mat” sessions for unstructured sparring

Cons

  • Limited morning classes

If you have a busy schedule, 374 MMA makes it much easier to fit training into your week. With up to 16 hours of weekday availability, you’ll have plenty of flexibility to train before work, after work, or somewhere in between.

I like how they ease new members into the gym. Their structured three-step enrollment process starts with a consultation, giving you a chance to discuss your goals before jumping into classes.

Whether you’re interested in self-defense, competition, or fitness, they’ll help point you in the right direction. Families are covered too, thanks to the dedicated 374 Kids Jiu Jitsu program for younger students.

Another nice touch is the gym’s responsive online contact portal, which makes it easy to ask questions or get started.

Just be aware that they offer very little protective gear for students, so you may need to buy your own sooner rather than later.

  • Exceptional daily schedule with 16-hour weekday availability
  • Structured 3-step enrollment with goal consultation
  • Dedicated “374 Kids Jiu Jitsu” program

Great place to learn martial arts

Great place to learn martial arts. They have great instructors for Muay thai and boxing, and most especially Jiu-Jitsu. It’s very friendly to newcomers, and great for intermediate and advance training as well. If you’re looking to learn and get a great workout, this is the best place to go to!

Spacious and has great energy

I love going to this gym! It’s clean, spacious and has great energy. For the last 3 months, Susan has been patiently and expertly training me to increase my  fitness and endurance. Susan is such a great trainer, always motivating and keeping our spirits up throughout the session with humor and gentle nudging which really helps.  I really look forward to our group class with Susan.

For anyone who wants to try martial arts without spending a fortune, CASK Karate-do Halifax offers one of the simplest membership options around.

With a flat rate of $55 per month and no long-term contracts, it’s easy to give martial arts a try without feeling like you’re making a huge financial commitment.

They specialize in Wado Karate, so you’ll receive focused instruction instead of trying to juggle several different disciplines.

I also think families will appreciate that adults can participate in the family classes for additional practice. It’s a thoughtful feature that lets parents and children spend more time training together.

The trade-off is that the class schedule is fairly limited. Since they only operate twice a week, you’ll need to plan ahead to make sure you can attend regularly.

Pros

  • Transparent no-contract monthly fee of $55
  • Completely free parking at the recreation centre
  • Family-inclusive training environment
  • Free trial class available for new practitioners

Positive, qualified instructor

I highly recommend this Karate instructor and school!! Garrett has a depth of passion and enthusiasm and a wealth of knowledge and experience in the discipline of karate. These are essential skills making him my first and only choice for a quality Karate instructor. The benefits of karate in addition to a positive, qualified instructor for the child or adult student are immeasurable.

We are all enjoying our experience

I train in the adult class, and my kids take the youth class. We are all enjoying our experience. Sensei Garrett blends precision, patience, and humour to keep the class technically strong, moving forward, and upbeat. We look forward to continuing in September.

5. Titans MMA

titans-mma

Website:http://www.titansmaaf.ca/

Address: 174 Horseshoe Lake Dr

Contact: 902-830-9111 | 902-830-2341

Hours: Class schedule varies

Titans MMA is a great fit for anyone who wants to learn from coaches with proven experience at a high level.

The gym is headed by Peter Martell, a 4th-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt trained under the respected Renzo Gracie lineage.

That pedigree gives students confidence that they’re learning techniques with a solid foundation, whether they’re beginners or experienced competitors.

I’ve also heard from several members that the private coaching sessions are excellent value for money, giving you a chance to receive one-on-one feedback.

Plus, you can trust your instructors to work on specific areas of your game, perfect for those who wish to join competitions.

On the downside, a QR code check-in is required before every class. While it only takes a moment, it’s one more thing to remember before you start every single class.

Pros

  • Elite competitive pedigree via Renzo Gracie lineage
  • Affordable “New Student Special” for first-month unlimited training
  • Specialized “Bully Proof Package” for youth students
  • Private 1-on-1 coaching for tournament strategy

Cons

  • Mandatory digital sign-in for every single class

Customer Reviews:

What a pleasure couldn’t recommend it enough

“Stopped in for a Muay Thai class! Knowledgeable coach and great students. Had the opportunity to spar with the coach, he’s a great fighter with excellent head movement, footwork, and a library of kicks! What a pleasure couldn’t recommend it enough for anyone looking to get into combat sports.”

He was encouraged, praised and supported by them both

My son had his first class here today. He can be quite shy trying something new and didn’t know what to expect, but Coach JP and Coach Mel immediately gave him 1 on 1 attention and instruction so he can catch up to the other kids. He wasn’t left behind, he was encouraged, praised and supported by them both. They are both great with kids, tough but fair and supportive, great to see! He was beaming with confidence after 1 class. He can’t wait to keep going and loves it already!
