How We Reviewed

Craftsmanship and Technical Range: We examined each shop’s ability to handle diverse alloys like aluminium, stainless steel, and structural carbon steel.
Service Flexibility: We checked whether shops offer on-site mobile welding alongside their physical fabrication bays. Having a mobile rig available helps contractors fix urgent breakdowns without hauling heavy equipment across town.
Design and Prototyping Support: We prioritised fabricators that help translate rough sketches and concepts into buildable shop plans. Teams that assist with technical drawings save clients substantial headaches.
Quoting Transparency and Timelines: We assessed how clearly each company estimates production schedules and material expenses up front.

1. Metal District

Address: 24 Neptune Crescent, Dartmouth

Contact: 902-237-0014

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM | Saturday-Sunday, By Appointment

Having the flexibility to choose between shop production and an on-site mobile truck keeps regional projects running without costly downtime.

Metal District nails this convenient balance by offering custom welding and precision machining both inside their Dartmouth shop and out in the field.

They routinely shape tricky aluminium builds alongside specialised stainless steel components for local contractors. Their practical team can also take an early prototype idea and turn it into durable hardware.

When we dropped by their Neptune Crescent location to discuss an aluminium frame, the crew walked through every step with total honesty.

But take note that weekend access is strictly by appointment only.

Still, their dependable metal fabrication work handles any tough metal fabrication project.

Pros

  • Mobile and in-shop services
  • Custom stainless steel welding
  • Dedicated aluminium fabrication
  • Early design and prototyping help

Cons

  • Weekend visits require advance booking

Shop staff are incredible

A true great group of guys, willing to tackle any task you could ask for no challenge to big or job too small. Had multiple pieces of equipment and trailers in and everytime it’s an outstanding well done job. Shop staff are incredible nothing fabrication I wouldn’t ask these guys to do

If I need anything else fabricated I will definitely go to Metal District again

I needed mounts for my deck railings fabricated. I brought my plans and Lee and I discussed them. He made some recommendations. He gave me one before they were all done so that I could try it. There were a couple of adjustments that needed to be made and Lee made these changes where he could. The mounts turned out perfect and Lee was great to deal with from start to finish.  If I need anything else fabricated I will definitely go to Metal District again. Also as many have said his pricing is very fair.  Thanks so much Lee.

Mariner Forge Enterprises Ltd brings decades of alloy experience. They deliver high-precision custom metalwork for both single prototypes and large component runs.

Plus, they back their skilled welders with high-speed plasma torches and clean waterjet cutting tables for crisp edges on aluminium, steel, and stainless plates.

The only real headache is their tight schedule, since the shop closes by mid-afternoon and wraps up at 3:00 PM on Fridays.

Charles Street Metalcraft offers artistic steelwork that adds character to a stylish home or storefront. They really know how to balance function and design.

This team creates custom architectural metalwork for residential and commercial spaces across the city. Instead of sticking to ordinary railings, they enjoy bringing creative ideas to life and taking on projects that are a little different.

You can bring them anything from a quick napkin sketch to detailed technical drawings, and they’ll turn your idea into custom textures and rich patina finishes.

However, their work focuses mainly on decorative accents and interior fixtures, so they aren’t the best fit for heavy marine structures or large industrial projects.

Pros

  • Architectural fixtures and fittings
  • Custom patina finishes and textures
  • Works from napkin sketches or blueprints
  • Original, unconventional metal design

Cons

  • Not built for heavy marine or industrial work

You won’t be let down

I’ve had the pleasure to have Charles Street Metal Craft contribute to one of our recent custom renovations. Fin diligently planned out how the highly custom deck rail and stairs would be fabricated and followed through with top notch service and an A+ product. We’re in the process of engaging him for another custom fabrication project that he has already provided valuable insight on. You won’t be let down!

Highly recommend

I had the pleasure to work with Fin for a multi site project in Nova Scotia. Fin came to our sites to assess damage to the doors and frames of large walk-in enclosures that we had set up for a client. He then fabricated and installed custom components for us to fix the issue, and prepared a report describing his analysis and repair.

Fin has been very responsive throughout the whole process, he has been transparent, and has consistently delivered high quality work.

I highly recommend Fin to anyone looking for a reliable and trustworthy fabricator.

Contact: 902-800-7971

Demanding harbour projects and polished residential builds need a welding team with strong structural skills. Halifax Fabrication handles both, working on everything from automated residential driveway gates to complex marine modules.

Plus, their crew can create artistic sculptures if you’re after something more decorative. They even back their structural work with a five-year warranty, giving customers extra peace of mind.

A local project manager we spoke with praised how easily the team handled the permit packages and engineering drawings for an exterior staircase.

But it’s worth noting that standard metal fabrication projects usually take three to six weeks before installation. That’s a longer wait, but it can be worthwhile if you need detailed, custom metalwork that meets structural requirements.

Pros

  • On-time and under-budget completion guarantee
  • Five-year structural warranty
  • Welds heavy marine and industrial modules
  • Artistic sculpture and gate design

Cons

  • Lead times average three to six weeks
