The 8 Best Places for Soup in Halifax That Will Make You Feel Better Instantly

best-soup-halifax

Soup is food for the soul. Whether I’m sick, stressed from work, or simply craving something comforting, a bowl of soup never fails to work its magic.

From cheesy French onion soups to spicy Korean kimchi jjigae, you’ll find global flavors in Halifax that’ll lift your spirits in unique and delicious ways.

I’ve spent countless evenings finding the most comforting bowls. In this guide, I’m thrilled to share my go-to spots that serve the best soups in Halifax.

1. In Spring Fine Asian Fusion Cuisine

Website: http://inspring.ca/

Location: 5171 Salter St

Operating hours: Daily 12 PM to 10 PM

Phone: +19024295888

Must-have: Spicy Broth

One of my favorite ways to enjoy soup is through hot pot at In Spring Fine Asian Fusion Cuisine. For just $29.99, you can dive into an all-you-can-eat buffet, which features thinly sliced meats, fresh seafood, and an assortment of vegetables.

You can choose two types of broth from six options. They have non-spicy, spicy, and even extra-spicy flavors for those who crave a serious kick.

For an extra $10, you can add special items to the regular buffet menu, such as premium beef, crispy fish skin, cuttlefish, and more.

Pro Tip:
They accept reservations, so call them up to book a table in advance.

2. Young Pocha

Location: 5650 Spring Garden Rd

Operating hours:

Sunday-Thursday, 12 PM to 10 PM

Friday-Saturday, 12 PM to 12 AM

Phone: +19029322309

Must-have: Mul Naengmyeon (Cold Buckwheat Noodles)

You might recognize Young Pocha from our list of the best hot pot restaurants in Halifax. Here, you can grill meat alongside a bubbling hot cauldron of spicy soup, which is a perfect setup to enjoy with friends.

While I do love a good spicy Army stew, or Budae JJigae as they call it, this spot has other lesser-known yet equally flavorful Korean dishes worth trying. Naengmyeon, or Cold Buckwheat Noodles, is a good example.

Although it’s not the kind of comfort you crave when you’re under the weather, its sweet, slightly tangy flavor is refreshing and not spicy at all. The beef broth is ice-cold, making it perfect for the hot summer months.

Pro Tip:
They have a vegetarian option for the Cold Buckwheat Noodles. If you want your soup to be meat-free, make sure to inform your servers.

3. Le Bistro By Liz

Website: http://lebistrohalifax.com/

Location: 1333 South Park St

Operating hours:

Monday-Thursday, 12 PM to 8 PM

Friday, 12 PM to 10 PM

Saturday, 11 AM to 10 PM

Sunday, 11 AM to 8 PM

Phone: +19024238428

Must-have: Onion Soup

Le Bistro By Liz is a cozy restaurant where you can savor French staples and other fusion dishes. Unlike other spots on our list, they don’t have an extensive selection of soup—just two items on their regular menu.

I’d come here just for the onion soup, a rich, savory, and gooey perfection topped with gourmet cheese croute. They even have a gluten-free version of it, which they’ll serve at your request.

Other than that, they have a fresh plum tomato basil soup. Although it’ll cost an extra $2, you should ask for parmesan because it’ll make the soup creamier and more flavorful.

Pro Tip:
Watch out for their lunch specials. You’ll find the latest additions to their menu on their socials.

4. Happy Plate

Location: 19 Alma Crescent

Operating hours:

Sunday, 9 AM–8 PM

Monday-Thursday, 10 AM–8 PM

Friday, 10 AM–10 PM

Saturday, 9 AM–10 PM

Phone: +19024050866

Must-have: Beef Nilaga

Happy Plate is one of the best Filipino restaurants in Halifax, serving traditional dishes alongside well-loved Canadian classics. Out of all the soups they offer, my all-time favorite is the Beef Nilaga, a simple, clear broth with huge cuts of meat and veggies.

It’s quite a hefty bowl so it’s best shared with others. But if you’re dining solo, you should order the combo meals, which offer an incredible variety of dishes at a reasonable price.

Their Beef Pares Mami is a must-try, especially if you’re craving noodles. It’s a rich, comforting soup made with braised beef and egg noodles, and then served with chili oil for those who like it a little spicy.

Pro Tip:
Don’t miss out on their desserts. The most popular item is the halo-halo, a shaved ice dessert with ice cream, coconut jellies, fruits, and creme caramel.

5. Beyond Pho

Location: 5518 Spring Garden Rd

Operating hours:

Sunday-Thursday, 11 AM–9 PM

Friday-Saturday, 11 AM–10 PM

Phone: +19024253133

Must-have: Bun Rieu Cua

This restaurant might be known for its variety of pho dishes, but as its name suggests, there’s more to it than the well-loved Vietnamese soup. If you love seafood, you should try the Bun Rieu Cua or the Lobster Laksa.

They’re topped with generous amounts of seafood, bean sprouts, tofu, onions, and herbs. They’re very filling and satisfying on their own, but I wouldn’t stop there because they have quite an extensive menu, packed with delicacies from all over Asia.

If you’re overwhelmed by all of your options, just ask for help. Their kind staff will go over the menu with you so you know exactly what to order.

Pro Tip:
Get their milk teas, especially if you like your soup a little spicy. Some of their teas are available hot and cold.

6. Pho Maniac

Website: https://phomaniac.com/

Location: 1252 Hollis St

Operating hours: Daily 11 AM–8 PM

Phone: +19024441366

Must-have: Bun Bo Hue

Another Vietnamese restaurant that serves incredible soup is Pho Maniac. Slow-cooked for 8 hours, their beef bone broth has a rich, umami flavor that will definitely lift your spirits up when you’re feeling under the weather.

They serve the pho with slices of tenderloin, soft rice noodles, and a little bit of spice to further enhance the flavors. You can choose other delicious cuts like back ribs, flank, or beef balls.

But if you don’t eat meat, they have a vegetable pho that is just as comforting, flavorful, and filling. Instead of slices of beef, you get cubes of tofu and other delicious veggies in your bowl.

Pro Tip:
Try their Vietnamese coffee, which is sweet yet quite strong. They’ll give you a small filter to brew the coffee right on your table.

7. Cafe Lunette

Website: https://www.cafelunette.com/

Location: 1741 Lower Water St #160

Operating hours:

Monday-Friday, 7 AM–10 PM

Saturday-Sunday, 9 AM–11 PM

Phone: +19023341300

Must-have: French Onion Soup

Located in the Queen’s Marque, Café Lunette is a charming bistro serving French classics. One of my go-to orders is from the two-course Prix Fixe menu, particularly the onion soup paired with steak frites, which costs only $38.

Made with veal broth, gruyere, and croutons, it’s soup-er delicious and cheesy. It’s quite rich and thick, so if you want to pair it with something lighter, you can opt for an avocado toast or a croissant BLT instead.

Here, they have different lunch and dinner menus, so you have various options to go with it. However, they don’t have other varieties of soup.

Pro Tip:
They accept reservations. You can call ahead or book a table from their website.

8. Tako Sushi and Ramen

Media credit: letseatlocalhfx

Website: http://www.takosushiramen.ca/

Location: 480 Parkland Dr

Operating hours:

Monday-Saturday, 11 AM–9 PM

Sunday, 12–9 PM

Phone: +19024058855

Must-have: Tonkatsu Ramen

Tako Sushi and Ramen is a casual restaurant located in Glenborne Plaza. If you’re craving Japanese food, it’s a great place to visit because you can satiate your sushi and ramen cravings at the same time.

I like their tonkatsu ramen with pork broth, noodles, egg, and a generous piece of pork cutlet. If you prefer the OG, go for the tonkotsu, which has barbecue instead of crispy breaded meat.

You have 8 other varieties of ramen to choose from, all flavorful and rich. They’re also served with corn, seaweed, mushrooms, and green onions.

Pro Tip:
If you don’t want a big bowl of ramen, you can order a smaller bowl of miso soup to pair with your Japanese meal.
