How We Reviewed

Instructor Qualifications: We evaluated the educational background and professional performance experience of the teachers at each facility across the city. This rigorous check ensures you learn from highly qualified experts.
Curriculum Variety: We assessed whether the school offers diverse teaching methods such as the Suzuki method, Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) certification paths, or customized private instruction.
Facility Accessibility: We carefully considered the location of the music studio within Halifax and the availability of dedicated parking lots or nearby public transit access. Finding a convenient spot makes those weekly practice commutes much less stressful.
Student Progress Tracking: We looked for clear evidence of regular recital opportunities and structured feedback systems designed to ensure consistent student growth. These essential performance milestones keep learners highly motivated.
Reviews & Reputation: We thoroughly checked for consistent high ratings from real clients on major platforms like Google and Yelp. Prioritizing community music schools with overwhelmingly positive feedback gives you the necessary peace of mind.

Hours: No Hours Listed

Stepping into a violin lesson with Merry Time Music Company feels like joining a vibrant, creative community. They heavily focus on group classes and fiddle programs, which makes the learning process highly social and less intimidating for absolute beginners.

You can easily jump into their four-week or eight-week sessions without feeling overwhelmed by long-term commitments.

We spoke to a friend who recently enrolled her young daughter here, and she couldn’t stop raving about how fun and engaging the instructors were.

The primary downside is that their group-heavy structure might not suit someone seeking strict, individualized classical training.

Still, if you want a relaxed violin lesson that prioritizes enjoyment, this is a fantastic spot. Their instructors genuinely help students discover a love for playing.

Pros

  • Excellent for early childhood music education
  • Short-term four- and eight-week class structures
  • Fiddle and folk music programs available
  • Relaxed and highly social learning atmosphere

Cons

  • Group-focused format limits individualized instruction

Parents looking for a highly structured violin lesson will find the Scotia Suzuki School of Music incredibly rewarding and engaging.

They follow the internationally recognized Suzuki method, which brilliantly emphasizes early ear training and deep parent involvement from a very young age.

Moreover, their comprehensive violin lessons build strong technical foundations and foster character development.

We personally attended a few of their group classes with our nephew, and seeing the kids play so confidently together was absolutely wonderful! Their supportive approach is truly excellent for young aspiring players.

On the other hand, there are only 37 parking spaces available at the school. And while that might sound like more than enough, that’s not exactly the case if your child is doing violin lessons at the same time as other students.

Pros

  • Strong focus on ear training and memory
  • Internationally recognized Suzuki teaching method
  • Excellent community support through group classes
  • Builds strong technical foundations for young players

Cons

  • Limited parking space available

Exceptional teachers

Our family has been at SSSM since September of 2018. It has become our second home and we will miss it dearly as we are moving away from Halifax. Our kids all thrived in their violin and musical theatre program. The private lesson teachers are exceptional. The group classes, orchestra and additional music offerings are all well-run, organized and essential in building a strong music school community.

Emilie Benigno holds a Master of Music degree from Ithaca College, making her a highly qualified teacher. She uses the Suzuki Method, which treats learning music like acquiring a spoken language through active listening.

For anyone hoping to eventually play just as beautifully as the musicians who perform during live performances of Chopin Nocturnes, her expert guidance provides an incredible musical foundation.

Additionally, students follow a clear curriculum featuring 36 weekly classes and frequent community outreach projects. You’ll love that you can take your violin lesson online or in person at her Hydrostone studio.

Actually, we chatted with a local parent whose child studies here, and she completely loved Emilie’s patient approach.

That said, Emilie has a short administrative schedule, so setting up initial contact isn’t always easy.

  • Qualified Suzuki Method instruction
  • Flexible online and in-person classes
  • Structured curriculum with regular recitals

Amazing

The place is beautiful, and the teachers are both demanding and incredibly kind with the children : true professionals and educators who help them make real progress. There are opportunities for children to play in ensembles or groups, and you can also attend recitals throughout the year (which are wonderful). In short, it’s amazing!!
