AGNS is more than just a museum; it’s a vibrant cultural hub nestled in the heart of Halifax. Established in 1908 as the Nova Scotia Museum of Fine Arts, the AGNS was renamed in 1975.
Its current building, the historic Dominion Building, has housed the art gallery since 1988 after several relocations.
The Dominion Building is an architectural gem, designed in the Italianate style and completed in 1868. Originally serving various governmental functions, it now represents Nova Scotia’s rich history and culture.

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia or AGNS is located in downtown Halifax at 1723 Hollis Street. This public art museum features the former Dominion Building and an adjacent Provincial Building.
How to Get to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia
By private vehicle: If you’re coming from Halifax, your journey kicks off on Highway 102, heading north until you spot the signs for Highway 101 East toward Bedford.
Next, take the exit from Highway 118 North to Dartmouth. This road merges with Main Street, where you’ll follow it right to the roundabout.
At the roundabout, take the second exit onto Portland Street, then continue straight and turn left onto Prince Street.
You’ll find the gallery on your left along Hollis Street. There are plenty of parking options nearby, including street parking and lots.
By bus: First, find your nearest bus stop and check the local transit schedule for routes heading to downtown Halifax.
Once on board, enjoy the ride until you reach the stop at Hollis Street. From there, it’s just a quick stroll to the gallery entrance.
By walking: Begin your stroll at a familiar spot, like the Halifax Waterfront. From there, head north on Lower Water Street, then take a left onto Hollis Street.
Keep walking, and you’ll find the gallery on your left, just a short walk from the sidewalk.

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM. On Thursdays, the gallery extends its hours, staying open until 9 PM.
