I make it a point to visit at least once a month because there’s something magical about these spots.
After exploring so many, I’ve rounded up some of my absolute favorites to help you discover the one that might just become your go-to waterfall retreat.

1. Kearney Lake Dam Trails

Distance from downtown Halifax: Approximately 12 km (15-minute drive)
The Kearney Lake Dam Trails offer a fun and easy escape into nature outside downtown Halifax. The trail starts near 26 Amesbury Gate and 53 Abbington Avenue, with parking options in a gravel lot by 26 Amesbury Gate or along Abbington Ave.
But a heads-up: avoid parking on Larry Uteck Boulevard. It can be tricky to get out of there.
This 800-meter trail is a breeze, with a smooth path covered in crusher dust and mostly flat terrain. Along the way, you’ll cross a cute wooden bridge over Kearney Run, where you can enjoy a scenic view of the dam’s waterfall.
The waterfall is a major highlight, with water cascading down from the dam, creating a peaceful and picturesque scene.
If you’re up for a longer walk after enjoying the waterfalls, you can extend your route by including Abbington Avenue and Larry Uteck Boulevard to create a bigger loop.
2. Uisge Ban Falls Provincial Park

Distance from downtown Halifax: Approximately 270 km (3-hour drive)
Uisge Ban Falls is a park with a name that sounds like a spell from a magical realm. Pronounced “Ouska-Ban,” and it’s totally worth the trip!
This park boasts a breathtaking waterfall that plunges about five stories, making it quite a sight to see. The trail is 1.85 miles round-trip, and it’s a gentle walk, so you can take in the views without breaking a sweat.
To get there, simply head towards Baddeck and follow the signs for Uisge Ban Falls Provincial Park. Once you arrive, the well-marked trail will guide you through beautiful forest scenery right to the majestic falls.
3. Miller Lake Falls

Distance from downtown Halifax: Approximately 30 km (30-minute drive)
A quick drive from Halifax, Miller Lake Falls is as easy to reach as it is breathtaking. Situated on the north end of Miller Lake in Fall River, these falls are merely a 10-minute walk from the road.
Ideal for anyone who wants stunning views without breaking a sweat, Miller Lake Falls offers a perfect nature escape.
To find it, park on Perrin Drive about 2 km before the Tilmann Brook bridge. Look for a trail on the left side of the road that leads directly to the falls. It’s a straightforward walk with a fabulous reward, making it a top choice for a speedy nature fix.
4. Indian Falls

Distance from downtown Halifax: Approximately 90 km (1-hour drive)
Indian Falls is like the quick espresso shot of waterfalls—small but totally refreshing! The trail is a breezy 800-foot round-trip, and in about 15 minutes, you’ll be standing right at the base of the falls, thanks to a handy staircase.
Once you’ve soaked in the falls, you can explore the park’s other trails, stroll along the rocky beach, or find a cozy spot at one of the lookout points. It’s the ideal little nature getaway when you need a fast, fun dose of the great outdoors!
5. Mary Ann Falls

Mary Ann Falls is a delightful little gem, with a waterfall that’s a quick hike away. The trail is under 350 feet long, so it’s super easy to reach the falls in no time.
You’ll start your adventure from a small parking area on Mary Ann Falls Road in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. And if you’re in the mood for a bigger adventure, you can hit the 5.2-mile Branch Pond Look-off Trail, which begins right from the same spot.
6. Pockwock Falls

Distance from downtown Halifax: Approximately 30 km (30-minute drive)
Pockwock Falls is a bit of a hidden hotspot outside Hammonds Plains. If you’re up for a bit of a scenic drive, it’s about 30 minutes from downtown Halifax.
These falls aren’t just pretty; they’ve got some history too. Once part of an old road connecting Halifax to Annapolis Royal in the 1800s, Pockwock Falls is a great spot to blend nature with a splash of the past.
To reach this serene spot, you’ll need to hike for around 45 minutes. Then, head northwest on Hammonds Plains Road, take a right on Pockwock Road and continue until you reach Camptown Road.
You can park there, and start your hike to these picturesque falls.
7. Corney Brook Falls

Distance from downtown Halifax: Approximately 310 km (3.5-hour drive)
Corney Brook Falls is a serene spot within a box-river canyon. The trail is 4 miles long with a gentle walk that follows a winding brook.
To start your adventure, head to Corney Brook Campground in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Oh, and in case you might miss it, the trailhead is right across from the campground.
8. North River Falls

Distance from downtown Halifax: Approximately 200 km (2-hour drive)
North River Falls is said to be the tallest waterfall in Nova Scotia, reaching over 105 feet high! The trail is quite a bit longer, at 11.2 miles round-trip, so get ready for a good hike.
As you walk, the trail will take you along the river valley all the way to the base of the falls. Simply wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring plenty of water and snacks to keep your energy up.
9. Economy Falls

Distance from downtown Halifax: Approximately 178 km (1.5-hour drive)
Economy Falls is a super easy waterfall to visit, with a trail that’s 1.25 miles round-trip. You’ll find 186 steps leading down to the falls, making it a fun little adventure.
Keep in mind that you’ll need to climb those steps again on the way back.
But don’t worry! Once you see the falls, you’ll feel it was totally worth it!
10. Phantom Falls

Distance from downtown Halifax: Approximately 50 km (1-hour drive)
Phantom Falls is Halifax’s biggest waterfall, and getting there is a bit of an adventure! It’s located in Upper Musquodoboit, and you’ll need to hike for about an hour to reach it.
The trail is easy to follow and safe for hikers of all levels, so you can breathe easy.
To start your journey, drive 4.5 km on Highway 336 and then turn right onto a dirt road. Keep going for another 1.8 km, and park where you see the signs.
From there, follow the signs to the falls. The waterfall is a real treat and makes the hike totally worth it!
11. Liscomb Falls

Distance from downtown Halifax: Approximately 177 km (2-hour drive)
Liscomb Falls is a cool spot on the Liscombe River Trail, which comes with a fun suspension bridge that offers amazing views of the falls and a nearby fish ladder. This trail is a 6-mile loop, so get ready for a bit of a workout!
To start, head to Liscombe Lodge Resort to find where the trail starts. Once you’re there, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and check out the special fish ladder that helps bring Atlantic salmon back to the river.
12. Wentworth Falls

Wentworth Falls is a bit of a drive from Halifax—about 1.5 hours—but totally worth the trip. Nestled in Wentworth Valley, this stunning waterfall is especially breathtaking during the spring melt.
The falls are a fantastic sight, and the area offers a scenic backdrop for a leisurely hike.
Although it’s farther from the city, the drive is pleasant, and the waterfall is a great reward for your journey. Once you’re there, it’s a perfect spot for a picnic or just to admire the cascading water.
13. Victoria Park: Joseph Howe Falls

Victoria Park in Truro is like a waterfall wonderland, with two amazing falls to check out: Joseph Howe Falls and Waddell Falls. It’s merely an hour’s drive from Halifax, making it a great place for a family outing or a fun day trip.
Joseph Howe Falls is easy to get to, so it’s perfect for everyone. The park is really well-kept, with clear paths that lead right to these beautiful waterfalls.
14. Victoria Park: Waddell Falls

No need to stress about tough climbs or tricky trails here. Instead, you’ll enjoy a pleasant, easy walk while taking in the beautiful scenery.
15. Delaps Cove Waterfalls

Delaps Cove Waterfalls is a stunning 43-foot-high cascade that you can see along the Bohaker Trail. This 1.4-mile loop trail takes about an hour to hike and offers fantastic views of the waterfall and cool basalt lava rocks from a special viewing platform.
If you’re looking for a relaxing hike, head to Delaps Cove Wilderness Area. It’s a perfect spot for a peaceful walk surrounded by amazing natural scenery.
