The North End of Halifax has a special kind of charm that keeps me coming back.  Sure, its nightlife is nothing short of legendary, with buzzing bars that have welcomed music legends from across the globe.

But for me, what makes it truly special is the eclectic mix of local shops, the warm, welcoming faces you encounter everywhere, and the strong community spirit. 

Even if it’s for a small pop-up market, it’s always worth the drive because I know it’ll have delicious food, great booze, and loads of fun activities.

The North End of Halifax is a trendy neighborhood known for its artsy vibe and delicious grub. It has an impressive lineup of cozy cafes and globally-inspired restaurants, where you can get everything from gourmet burgers to vegan delights.

Its nightlife scene is equally dynamic. With live music venues and intimate cocktail bars dotting the neighborhood, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The North End of Halifax lies just north of downtown, bordered by Cogswell Street, Windsor Street, the Halifax Harbour, and the Bedford Basin.

How to Get to North End, Halifax

Walk: The North End is within walking distance from Downtown Halifax. From the Citadel, you’ll reach it in 15 minutes or less.

Just cross Ta13 Road and make your way to the Old Town Clock on Brunswick Street. Then, turn left on Gottingen Street and cross Cogswell Street to enter the neighborhood.

Bike: You can bike to the North End from anywhere in Downtown Halifax, which should take about 6 minutes or less.

If you’re coming from the Citadel, you can exit Ta13 Road and move north onto Ahern. Follow the roundabout to Cogswell Street, then turn left on Bauer or Gottingen.

Drive: The North End is a quick 3-minute drive away from the Citadel and other popular attractions. When you exit the Citadel, go onto Ahern Avenue and follow Cogswell Street. 

Bus: Take the 7B on Scotia Square via Robie, which is on Barrington Street before Sackville. It will take you all the way to the North End via Gottingen Street.

Visit Africville Museum

One of the top attractions in the neighborhood is Africville Museum, where you can learn about the vibrant African community that once settled here. 

The original houses and buildings were destroyed in the 1960s due to the city’s industrial expansion. However, they built a replica of the church that was the heart of the community. The museum is housed inside, which you can visit from Monday to Friday.

Explore Fort Needham Memorial Park

Although they have lots of space in the restaurant, it can get quite packed. You should make a reservation ahead of time, especially if you’re celebrating a special occasion or coming from out of town.

Instead of hefty meals, they serve small plates, which complement their boozy concoctions. I always go for their fresh seafood, but they have other classic bar fare treats such as wings and tacos.
